This ought to interest both ecovillages, and individuals. Your community's computers, or just your own, can number-munch in their idle time. Just download a simple program from Berkeley University called, BOINC. Then select a research project to contribute to. Projects include:

making advanced solar cells from organic molecules (Harvard)

finding a cure for cancer (World Community Grid)

Studying global warming

I've been doing it for a few years and enjoy contributing. Our computers can be more powerful than the best supercomputers, when working in a community!

Dear Fellows,

I am planning a research project into a specific form of intentional community, where the community offers temporary experiences of commmunity to disadvantaged groups. I recently discovered that an old friend has gone to manage a community on the Isle of Mull called CAMAS. This community works with disadvantaged young people from in and around Glasgow, and the strong community ethic is said to have a strong impact on the guests, to such an extent that many of them return to become semi-permanent volunteers. This made me wonder about those young people who did not return, and what kind of a lasting impression an intense experience of community may have had on them. I decided that it would be a very useful research project to look into the outcomes of communities such as these, as I understand there is little of this type of research about.

However, I need to find out initially whether there are many such communities, and am wondering if anyone can send me any names/contact details of communities that do engage in this type of work?

hope to hear from you,

Louis

We have been exploring the idea of joining an IC for some time now and have visited over a dozen. We love the concept but with kids sometimes we let the pulls of daily mainstream life consume us and forget our vision of community. We have three great boys ages 10, 15 and 18 who have been open to the idea of moving to a community and appreciate the concept. Not so anymore! We are trying to be thoughtful of our eldest's desire to finish high school here in the area and to plan our escape after the second one has finished in 2012. In the meantime... We hope to bring some folks here for our version of community living.
We have a 5 bedroom home on 3 acres with 35 acres of protected forest behind us and water access across the street for kayaking/boating. We live on a beautiful coastal Maine island that is easily accessible by a handsome bridge...the view is breathtaking. We are just 10 minutes from all major shopping needs and schools, library, etc. yet our property is very private and pretty. We have a nice grassy area for games with a fire cirlce at the outer edges and lots of woods. There are trails next door for mountain biking and walking.
Personally, I'd love to have a couple of women here as I am unfairly outnumbered. We could accomodate one couple, individual, or parent and child inside and others who may have their own temporary housing options like yurt, bus, teepee, etc.
We look forward to sharing meals, child raising joys and challenges, bicycling the
