Cappy and I have finally moved onto the property in McNeal Az. We have 4 permanent structures including a 35' travel trailer, pickup camper mounted above the ground, an electric house for the solar inverter and panels, and a 65' single wide mobile home. The perimeter fence is almost complete and we are slowly getting the basic needs in place. We are looking for individuals or couples to share the experience with us. We dont have a religious agenda. We would like to grow as much food as we can to eat and sell, find a way to market the natural resources on the property or to start some kind of for profit enterprise on the property. We are located at the base of a small Butte that rises above the valley. I have thoughts we could put a low power radio station on the top of the Butte. We have just started to bounce ideas around as to what we could do out here. 40 acres seems big enough to do anything we want to do. If you are interested please email at gordo6556@gmail.com. We can open a dialogue and go from there. We are looking for a caretaker to be on the property during the weekdays 24-7 and weekends off. Salary would be negotiable. If you would like to be in a warm place check out the weatherunderground website to find the temps. We are at 4200' in the sonoran desert. You can find us under Bird of Paradise in the IC. I will be updating the site soon.

I am a spiritually born human being, and I have received the order, to make myself next spring on the way, to find other spiritually born brothers and sisters, or to help from the Divine Parents chosen people by their spiritual birth. So, if you have the feeling, to be called, to become a servant of the living Divine, then you can invite me in your home. In exchange, I will teach you, how you can perceive and understand the numinous voice of the Divine.

Was it only a short moment in time when some of us tried to make a change by giving up the post-industrial mindset that destroyed the simplicity of living; the dream of a sustainable community?

As a creative individual, with skills in many areas, I am at times, too open-minded for this compartmentalized world. I agree with sustainability; conservation is good thing, when balanced with realistic and attainable goals.

To me, this means having electricity, warm beds, dry floors, healthy food, occasional online access, labor to keep from growing flabby, books & periodicals, intelligent conversation and above all, purposeful communal cooperation, as well as a location free from blizzards, hurricanes, shopping malls and malaria.

I have sent introductions to a number of communities and received a small, few replies. A few individuals have contacted me, some with similar desires, goals and dreams.

To work to survive, to assist, to teach and to learn, that should be the result. Not individually, but in an environment where you are rewarded beyond personal satisfaction; with positive change for all.

I have assets in reserve and much choice, but I am growing stagnant, literally and figuratively. I am forty-something, positive, healthy, freethinking, tolerant, clean, stable and mature, with no obligations.

"You may say, I'm a dreamer..."

The site:https://sites.google.com/site/farmsforgrazingandgrowing/

I am looking for a core group to buy a farm ( focusing on Virginia/mid Atlantic for growing season/rain fall rates/water available). Ideally I would like to have myself and 2 or??others with like resources for the project. $50-$150 k down (each) to pay off the parcel up front. All of us will need to have the financial ability to bring the property up to snuff and the project to fruition with minimal additional outlay.. I am looking for something to do and work with some structures and land. Ideally, the property will be reasonably priced and need some TLC. My goal is (as always) to use my skills and drive to soak in the necessary sweat equity to acquire value for $. In this market we may be able to find something that needs minimal initial work, that would obviously be desirable.
I have recently sold a resort hostel/motel on a popular beach that was my bread, butter and breakfast for 15 years. I seriously would like to get my hands dirty again and feed some animals, put up some fence and grow some stuff to eat with some cool, solid people.I am a mindful, grounded person, not religious
I am looking for individuals who have some skills and ideas and have realized some of their goals and dreams and would like to get started as partners for some peace of mind on a parcel of land!
Let me know a bit about yourself and if this resonates with you.

Steve Hopwood just posted a note, looking for a "survivalist type" community. He raises a good point.
The world economy is in great distress these days. And with the gross over spending by gov't in the US, our economy just may fail.
Whatever our various social and political points of view may be, one thing is certain, being prepared for hard times is becoming a necessity.
I suggest you all spend some time everyday reading www.survivalblog.com. It is the single best source of information on how to prepare for and survive/thrive in difficult times, no matter what their cause.
Survivalblog also has listings of communities and folks looking for members and communities.

I'm looking for a survivilist type community that thinks that the U.S. Government is on the brink of collaspe. This community can't be one of those gun toting, shoot 'em up branch davidians on the one hand but it also can't be one of those politicaly correct, femminist dominated communities on the other.Somewheres in between would be just fine for me. So if anybody out there knows of one that fit my description please let me know.Thank you

Cute Communal Cottage in the Country
hi there!
we are two houses of 8.5 people 8 miles outside of sebastopol (in wooded coastal Nor Cal) on beautiful acreage (part of a larger IC). we are trying to live as sustainably & communally as we know how. the rooms are small and there’s only one composting toilet, but we do have a all the usual amenities of a house including wi-fi and wood heat. but we are not a normal house: we live very communally and do most things together including cooking, cleaning, food processing, construction projects, crafts, harvesting, caring for our goats and chickens, reading, etc. so we are looking for people who like doing things with people most of the time. we are also interested in exploring some form of mini house sized egalitarianism (like uhm a family) possibly.
about us: we are very non-conventional and think quite differently from the dominate culture. but we really like people and like having fun/being silly but not “partying”. we love learning new things both intellectually and experientially. we generally have lot’s of people in the house because we have friends, wwoofers, couch-serfers that come stay. we have very local jobs so we are almost always home and NPR or music is almost always on. but we are also very respectful of other people’s needs and can be quiet or vacate the house sometimes if needed. we're young enough to be openminded and have fun but old enough to be serious and listen and able to get things done.
come ASAP!

The Sanctuary is set on 120 acres of wooded rolling hills in Southern Indiana. We have almost no debt and currently generate positive revenues.

We raise elk, buffalo, chickens on the ranch and, there is abundant wildlife all around our place.

Think of the diet here as that of our great great grandparents. For some of you, your great, great, great grand parents, providing they lived out west during the mid 1800's.

Here we eat, Elk and Buffalo that we raise ourselves on site, Venison from the local deer population, grass fed beef from the local farmers. There is a farmers market an hour away here, we can buy most greens and vegetables that are in season. Rice, lentils and beans is a daily staple at the ranch. We have a grow room where we grow sprouts and wheat grass for green drinks and as our food.

Currently on the farm we grow grapes, we have 1000 plants and 7 varieties that are now 5 years old and considered mature. We also have black berries, raspberries and blueberries that we planted this past year.

Growing wild here are several persimmon trees that have a wonderful sweet fruit.

Presently we plant a few acres of sweet corn and have lined out a new area for a 3 acre organic garden. The ponds on site is loaded with dish, turtles and frogs.

The buildings & housing are in place for living. There are still certain issues to workout. We have jobs for people that can work with little direction. We have room for a person to be the general manager of the operations.

Seeking Community RawFoodDude Posted On 11/9/2009, Last Updated On 11/10/2009
I am a 26 year old male seeking a self-sustainable community where no monthly fee is required, but only hard work. I am currently volunteering at the local farm to acquire some basic organic farming skills. My ideal is naturally to join the appropriate community for me. I prefer a community that is progressive in their ideals, although I am generally open-minded and accepting of those who are likewise the same. I have a certain disdain for the corporate world and seek a group of like-minded people who are non-conforming, despise labels and could care less about the needs of CEO's. Wholesome organic foods (preferably RAW) is a must for me :). I love the peace that I feel when I'm out in the field weeding underneath the sunshine and breathing in fresh air. Adding that along with a tightly knit community of accepting individuals would be as close to a utopia as I could ever envision.

Life becomes ever increasingly stagnant when it suddenly dawns on you that the material world erected by an oligarchical madhouse is nothing short of illusory. My questioning of this began in my early teens of which I am delighted to have been enlightened at such an age. Of course, finding the correct environment where the non-conforming progressive's reside is absolutely essential to break through this plateau.

Do contact me whether you are seeking community or are seeking new members. I'd like to network with as many individuals with the same underlying passion for interconnectedness.

The Willow House in Berkeley...
-----PHONE NUMBER CORRECTED-----
is reforming now that the year-round orchard is established. This was planned to be a very sustainable and attractive urban farm to use as a publicity center for rural self-sufficient ICs, both new or with openings. We are having dinners this week, guests welcome, near BART/transit/880.
The long term is goal is to help establish a global network of self-sufficient ICs, based on a gift/community economic system and to help more quickly supersede the unsustainable capitalist/ownership/rental-based economic system/(the cause-of-problems.)

We now seek
1: N. Ca. area rural ICs that are iso members/interns/volunteers, such as to plant orchards. We have a lot of physical resources (tools, books etc) that we would like to move to a rural location soon, where we may start planting orchards/gardens/camping/etc. We will organize car/vanpools for volunteers to help with the rural IC(s) We want to convert unused rural land into garden paradise(s).
2-There is room for members to stay in Berkeley right NOW (near transit) and help start both a nightly dinner system (Vegan) and an hour-based community economy.
3- we wish to make this house non-profit-owned by spring, (but we may need an established non-profit) and then rebuild the physical house.
4-iso long-term seekers to help start the dinners/gardens/etc. and the FLHOUR economy, even if you do not live here. We plan for large gourmet dinners with lots of

Seeking others willing to work and learn skills in sustainable simplicity and who have experience to offer in growing food, carpentry, and care for the land to join me in sharing farm operations on a small organic orchard and berry farm in the mountains of N.C.One & 1/2 hr. NE of Asheville. In the spirit of Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day offer hospitality and training in sustainable vocations, agriculture and energy. Outhouse, outside hot shower, pure mountain creek water, heating and cooking on wood stoves. Lighting from oil lamps and 2 small solar panels. Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be.
The last of life, for which the first was made…
--Robert Browning

We are two friends, 54 and 62 years old. After investigating adult communities, and finding them very expensive and not really reflective of our social and eco-friendly values, we are exploring creating a community.

We are writers, artists, organic gardeners, quiet, considerate, tolerant, liberal, progressive. We love nature, reading, animals, art, honesty, humor.

We own and live on a beautiful 52-acre farm in central Alabama, near Birmingham, consisting of mature forest and rolling pasture, with a creek and swimming hole. We have built a small cabin, have a big organic garden and are converting an old barn into an art studio. We enjoy a year-round growing season.

Our idea: A community of 8–12 households in small-footprint, ecologically-friendly homes. A place where people who came of age during an idealistic time aren’t forced to abandon their way of being—of relating respectfully and meaningfully to other people and to nature—by the realities of getting older in difficult economic times.

Wheelchair friendly.

We welcome discussions with those who are interested. We would like to share more about the land and our plans, and hear your ideas as well.

We prefer phone calls as a way to connect. We have free long-distance, so feel free to ask us to call you right back.

Seeking adventurous and well traveled people to form an elder community in the Guadalajara, Mexico area

I'm interested in progressive minded people to form a neighborhood cooperative with a close knit social system, saving money by pooling resources and live a better life than what's available in the U.S. Like me, you've traveled extensively and consider yourself a citizen of the world rather than just an American and disenchanted with American society. And you are definitely more adventurous than the average American if you're considering moving to a foreign country.

I've traveled around the world and had a desire to emigrate for the past 5 years. I've decided 2010 is the time to follow my dream to emigrate!

I am interested in forming a community of rental housing (rather than buying) as many people (especially now) are not in a financial situation to buy property and you can rent in Mexico as cheaply as buying. The community would consist of 3 to 6 households in a regular middle class Guadalajara neighborhood. The environment would be designed for ages 50 plus and ideal for those with little or no social support system like myself and pet oriented. Mexico offer better options for health care compared to the expensive and unattainable American health system especially now during the difficult economic times.

Most of the senior communities in Mexico are quite expensive for those of us without a hefty pension, 401K and/or spouse support and don't necessarily

I'm seeking a spiritual but not religious community. I prefer to learn of the God Who created the universe and my purpose, without putting that God in a little religious box designed by the traditions of men.

Also, I am looking for a FAIR work/trade agreement that allows me to earn extra cash with my FREE time, either with you or elsewhere. I am not afraid of hard work, I like eating bulk beans and rice (organic preferred), I enjoy living in canvas tents, teepees or log cabins.

I am not cheap labor for hire. I believe "common" vision requires mutual respect.

I enjoy organic gardening and farming, and just good ole basic work necessary to survive. I am a musician, writer, I enjoy taking a boat out on the lake too.

Sincerely

An Intentional house in the historic West End area of Atlanta, GA (just minutes from Downtown and the highway) has a room opening.

We're a social justice focused house that works within and without on social issues.

We are a diverse group, ages, ideas, race, ethnicies, sexualities...

To help balance out the house a bit we're intentionally seeking a new house mate. White or Latina (actually any race, ethinicity other than African-American). Someone whose over 30 years of year and interested in living in a co-owned, co-shared housing situation and willing to agree to 'try it out' for a least a year.

The house is still forming around ownership and how that looks/works. So you can jump in on the ground floor if that's what interest you. Especially interested in those who want to be co-owners but not a set in stone.

We engage in community activities that we try to do together on a regular basis - so seeking someone whose committed to that process and willing to spend a minimum of 5 hours a week with co-housemates and housing issues.

We will consider ANYONE who falls outside of the above but that's the 'ideal' in just a balance sense but not written in stone. Other things could certainly outweigh the need for balance. We also need balance in age. So a 50+ male would also be of interest.

Room available NOW!

We're looking for emotionally mature, responsible, self-aware people, who see sustainable community based on agriculture as the new reality.

Since you are aware of many of the planet’s problems, including possible collapse of civilization as we know it- you will believe its time to do what we can to achieve sustainability in a rural agricultural based community of like minded people. We believe Tolles New Earth book gave us a path towards how to achieve that, how to live with higher awareness.

Our desire is to create our own future, rather than let events dictate it to us. At laSenda, we are striving to build a positive, sustainable community life through growing food, limiting consumerism, investing in alternative energy, using our well water, and outreaching to the greater community in meaningful ways.

LaSenda EcoVillage is 6 acres of beautiful land & trees, complete with 200 yards of ponds with flowing water, sustainable living units in the forest fronting the ponds, & rich soil for growing organic food. We have a mild year-round growing climate & very high solar hours.

As an intentional community, laSenda will use a legal structure which allows blocks of shares of equal value to be purchased, held, and sold. At laSenda, a full share includes a solar-passive rammed earth house & share of the land w/a buy-in range of $40K.

Check out our blog for more info. If you’re interested, contact us and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.

we are a forming community in Portland, OR. we occupy a six bedroom house in close-in metro Portland. there is a large upstairs room available. we are all vegetarians and vegans. three of us out of the five had been deeply committed for a decade to a large community in northern california. we set up shekina cafe at the rainbow gathering which hosted workshops during the day in our Bedouin tent providing meals and at night we had large stage built from hanging logs for theatrical performance and bands.

we would like to continue doing these types of en devours but find it necessary to create a non-profit community as a home-base. our past community has been gone for over four years now as an organization. this has lead us to establish a non-profit/community ourselves on more successful principles. we plan on obtaining land outside of Portland where we can practice sustainable living and spirituality with a house in the city for the arts and political action/activism. we follow a more contemplative model of christianity but accept all forms of orthodox denominations as well as most contemplative spiritual denominations. because of our eclectic spirituality a socratic method of seeking truth is adhered to. we follow strictly a consensus format of decision making. the winter is a time of innovation and the summer a time of sharing those innovations with the wider world. we do this by going to festivals, teaching workshops, and visiting other communities.

Seeking Community ArtsandBlues Posted On 9/27/2009, Last Updated On 10/17/2009
Is being young and strong, or affluent, all that really matters? I've met a lot of 40-year-olds with plenty to contribute for their 20 years of adult experience. At age 60, with 40 years of adulthood behind me, I have plenty to offer too. I have, knowledge, perspective, hindsight, clarity, regret and sadness, enthusiasm, and maybe some wisdom born of making mistakes and dealing with them.

I can't carry the heavy physical load but I'm healthy, still look d**n good, and I bring a stable retirement income. I can teach you or you children how to paint, or sing, or play guitar, make a pot of chili or bake bread. I can stay up all night when you're sick or lonely and need a friend. I know how to do a lot of things but most of all I can be there.

I'm seeking community - tribe, family, place. I bring income, my own creature comforts, an open mind and a willing heart.

Edit: some of the responses have been couples looking for a unicorn for FMF but, too bad, I would be another M.

LOOKING FOR LAND???? Starting a Community???
If you're looking for land and finding high prices I just want to offer the suggestion of looking at Mecklenburg County Virginia. A beautiful, rural county of only 35,000 people that's over 2 hours south of Richmond and over an hour and a quarter over the border of Va/Nc to Raleigh. In other words not too close to a big city but not way far away either. Some recent ads for good-sized parcels include 136 acres asking $195,000 and 167 acres asking $315,000 both with owner financing and both are ASKING prices and even 89 acres asking $169,000 - this puts you in the $1,500 an acre range or even less at final sales prices I believe. I have no ties to realtors and I have nothing to sell. Would just like to see an intentional community locate somewhere near here - a big plus is the eight hundred mile shoreline Buggs Island Lake or Kerr Reservoir - whichever name you prefer, nearby. Farms, old dairy farms, lots of acreage available, a small population, there's lots of deer, turkey, fishing, beautiful countryside and over an hour or two to major cities - to me Mecklenburg County Virginia should be looked at!! Check out the nice small town of Clarksville on the lake. Good Hunting.

Small farm community working toward sustainability near Tampa FL seeking other farmers. We have tools, housing, income, no debt, knowledge, and experience. Looking for persons to join us that understand human, social and enviromental problems brought on by unsustainable living; folks wanting to live with nature and who accept the rules of intentional communities.
Been looking for a garden manager, and our ornamental tree business is barely making any income. So, interested in transitioning 20 to 40 acres into some kind of animal operation, similar to PolyFace Farms in VA. To create income and help keep up with the annual pest vines. Have experience and want to help? We updated our web site.

We are located in Washington DC in Petworth near the metro. The room available is in the basement and has its own kitchen and bathroom, for the community to share, and is $675/mo + utilities.

We are three socially engaged individuals with varying practices, primarily Buddhist. We are two women, one man, in our 20s/30s. We plan to meditate together, perform service activities together, and share meals regularly. Collectively, we compose music, study Tai Chi Chuan, lived in Catholic, Buddhist, and Hindu collective homes, follow socially-engaged Buddhist principles, and hone our environmental and social consciousness.

We value respect and compassion. We are committed to direct, non-violent communication. We support each other in self-reflection and t nurture lots o’ joy. We're mindful of the environment— growing vegetables, supporting local farms, recycling, being responsible with our energy and water use. We plan to put our ideals into practice by volunteering with those that are underserved. Hello all kind spirits, my name is Kevin and I am currently an anthropology/classical culture major at Ball State University in Muncie, In. The university wants more money out of me and I just don't have it. I believe I can attain more ethnographic knowledge living in a smaller community. I've worked in organic gardens in Hawaii and have basic growing knowledge. Although I do not have much money I am a hard working, loving, spiritual, and kind person looking for a new home and a new chance. I am willing to re -locate anywhere. The life I lived in Hawaii is one I wish to live again. I do not think, nay, I know this world we are to work and live is not the one for me. I love community, understanding, sharing of food, knowledge (the true wealth), and spirit. I am a tapped well, parched, thirsty for the water of humanity.

I am a two-time member of one community listed here, the Jesus People USA (Evangelical Covenant Church).

My personal history also places me in a couple other lesser known Christian communes, one having been the Highway Missionaries, alternately known as The Servant Community.

A remnant of the former Servant Community still exists as part of the Vineyard Central Church in Cinci OH, where i recently visited briefly.

And i remain friendly with a few of the folks at Jpusa.

I am pleased to note that a friend from inside the Jesus People has joined with me on the admin. of this listing.

Lyda Jackson is her name. She has my full confidence as a long-term member of the community.

I live on a beautiful 2+ acre property in Danbury, Connecticut, 90 minutes from Manhattan and one mile from a Metro North Train Station.

The property borders thousands of acres of open space including lakes, trails and tremendous wildlife (coyotes, hawks, bobcats...)

I live in a small cottage with my 7 y/o, where I am creating a yoga/dance studio this winter.

There is a HUGE partially-furnished 4+ bedroom house for rent on the property with an additional office, sunroom, greenhouse, garage, 2 fire-places, patios, gardens, laundry and a gourmet kitchen.

We are still establishing the rental cost (around $4K/m), and hope to rent it to one lease-holder who has a securely established source of income before the end of the year...

Ideally anther family who would be interested in sharing a garden, fruit trees, common space, weekly meals etc.

Single mother of 4-yr-old son in downstate NY looking to form a mini-community in Rockland Cty. We'd like to share a house with another mother and child(ren), or 1-2 female adults who are financially stable & interested in sharing lives. I'm interested in holistic health, sustainability, organic gardening, living simply, traditional/whole foods (some raw in season, a little quality meat here & there), low-tech, natural crafts, & yoga/meditation. We're TV-free, though I may watch a DVD occasionally after my son's bedtime. We rise early & go to bed early. I'm neat, considerate, & a good communicator. I'm a pretty organized and reliable person--no drama--despite being crunchy & spiritual! I'm also a huge believer in the power of community, deep connections, good conversation, and the daily cultivation of personal growth, joy, and peace. The area is close to NYC, Westchester, and N Jersey, yet has a rural feel. My son attends the local Waldorf school, which goes from N-12th grade. The school is bordered by a natural foods coop, a Waldorf teacher's college, a Eurythmy school, an intentional community and farm centered around the care of elders, a biodynamic education center, a fiber arts studio, and an anthroposophical center which holds conferences, performances, workshops, study groups, etc--all surrounded by suburbs. The community is linked physically and socially, as well as a life rich in the celebration of the seasonal festivals. To explore this, please contact me. Thanks.

Hello,

I am a gay man who will be 80 years old in February. Although I am still in fairly good health, my energy level is lower and taking care of property by myself is not as easy as it once was. For this reason, I am looking for an alternate living environment. I can consider an intentional community, co-housing or other living situation.

My health benefits are only good in the US, so I can not consider living outside the US. I prefer a warmer climate but will consider northern states.

I have put my house up for sale. While I am waiting for a buyer, I am researching different living arrangements that are gay friendly and intergenerational that I can consider and perhaps visit.

I have a metaphysical interest. You can learn more about this interest at my website http://auriclight.com

I have an educational and administrative background, am computer literate including simple web site design. I also have a background in nonprofit set up, management, and grant writing.

Please contact me if you have a living environment I can consider.

We are a mature couple and would like the same type of people to join us. Someone who can hold up their end of a conversation. They must love animals, we have 3 large dogs and livestock. We have been ripped off and don't want it to happen again.
I'm sorry, but we have gone past the time of children living with us. However kids visiting is fine.

We are a family of three, and soon to be 4, including two mature, skilled and competent 30 somethings, looking for a nice situation where we could potentially caretake land, take care of kids or people who need an extra hand of some sort in California ---or we are interested in living at an intentional community, if we found the right one, but we would need to be able to work for our rent/land use, we don't have much in the means of "start up" cash but we have much to offer. We've run our own handyman business for years here in the bay area and have all kinds of tools, experience and knowledge to bring with us. We can do anything from landscaping maintence to building new structures or remodels of new ones. We both love gardening. I also have extensive experience and education in early childhood, I worked as an intern teacher at a progressive college and have worked with children of all ages and as a substitute teacher. Clear communication is huge to both of us. We are both creative thinkers.
We have a toddler named Thia who turned 2 in the spring and our new baby is due this month, as well as a black lab, so we are looking for something with land or at least a decent yard. We have a small self contained camper that could be part of what we live in, as well as some yurt/yurt like structures that are possibilities if we went somewhere where there wasn't housing or sufficient housing for our needs. We have some flexibility as to when we move.
We are good, kind hearted people

Have other intentional communities dealt with the question of debts assigned to individual members? As a member of a apostolic fellowship IRS 501 (d) community, my income is low, I show a share of the community profits as my income, one member has been assessed a child support amount as to the value of services that he gives to the community, which is 10 times greater than the individual share or of anything we give to a member. In this case the courts have assessed the member child support to the community.

This ought to interest both ecovillages, and individuals. Your community's computers, or just your own, can number-munch in their idle time. Just download a simple program from Berkeley University called, BOINC. Then select a research project to contribute to. Projects include:

making advanced solar cells from organic molecules (Harvard)

finding a cure for cancer (World Community Grid)

Studying global warming

I've been doing it for a few years and enjoy contributing. Our computers can be more powerful than the best supercomputers, when working in a community!

Community Forming Air in Portland, Oregon (seeking to establish rural community) Posted On 8/28/2009, Last Updated On 9/5/2009
We are an egalitarian community called Motherland Ecovillage, inspired by a vision of a community of neighbors living in harmony with nature. Each family will live on their own land, about 2.5 acres (1 hectare), to design & plant your own gardens, grow your own food, co-create a beautiful home & space of love, & cultivate a personal connection with the natural ecosystem. Values include 100% organic gardening, non-toxic homes, & supporting each other in transitioning to re-localized "small is beautiful" living systems. This new 2.5 acre family-centered ecovillage model answers the most pressing concerns of our time, inclu. peak oil, climate change, ecological restoration, family, education, health, housing, transportation, & economic uncertainty. Permaculture, biointensive, indigenous practices, & other gardening approaches will all be welcome (green thumbs & black thumbs alike), but with a preference for planting self-sustaining perennials & orchards in addition to annuals, & self-sufficient gardening that does not use machinery & does not seek to profit from the land (but surplus sales at the farmers market are great!). The original meaning of the word "farm" is to take. The original meaning of the word "garden" is to give. We seek to establish a culture of generosity, abundance, independence, creativity, truth, joy, & love. Open to all: traditional & non-traditional families, singles, elders, youth, students, etc. We are in the visioning stage.

We have an opening in our community for a person looking to grow, to learn, to offer service to the world as well as having a rich emotional life. We are both activist and intimate, focused on personal growth, social change, ecological concerns, and more. We live in two houses side-by-side in a wooded area very close to Washington, DC. We believe strongly in networking and finding ways to multiply the effect we can have to bring about a healthy and just society. Our ic.org listing gives many more details:
http://directory.ic.org/20351/Chrysalis_Community

Our philosophy is eclectic; we don’t follow any one path, but are open to learning what we can from all loving paths. Among other collaborations, we work closely with the Network for a New Culture (www.nfnc.org), producing its Summer Camp East and other New Culture events.

Projects and businesses come from the passions of the specific people here; independent initiative is strongly encouraged. Residents have the option to contribute money, work or a combination of the two. We require only three hours a day to cover room, board, and other necessities; we feel that it is important that our members have substantial free time so that they can engage with their passions and concerns. Located where we are, there are also many opportunities to work outside the community as well.

Some of us expect to be here for many years; some people make a significant contribution even if they only stay a short time. We welcome

Dear Fellows,

I am planning a research project into a specific form of intentional community, where the community offers temporary experiences of commmunity to disadvantaged groups. I recently discovered that an old friend has gone to manage a community on the Isle of Mull called CAMAS. This community works with disadvantaged young people from in and around Glasgow, and the strong community ethic is said to have a strong impact on the guests, to such an extent that many of them return to become semi-permanent volunteers. This made me wonder about those young people who did not return, and what kind of a lasting impression an intense experience of community may have had on them. I decided that it would be a very useful research project to look into the outcomes of communities such as these, as I understand there is little of this type of research about.

However, I need to find out initially whether there are many such communities, and am wondering if anyone can send me any names/contact details of communities that do engage in this type of work?

hope to hear from you,

Louis

We have been exploring the idea of joining an IC for some time now and have visited over a dozen. We love the concept but with kids sometimes we let the pulls of daily mainstream life consume us and forget our vision of community. We have three great boys ages 10, 15 and 18 who have been open to the idea of moving to a community and appreciate the concept. Not so anymore! We are trying to be thoughtful of our eldest's desire to finish high school here in the area and to plan our escape after the second one has finished in 2012. In the meantime... We hope to bring some folks here for our version of community living.
We have a 5 bedroom home on 3 acres with 35 acres of protected forest behind us and water access across the street for kayaking/boating. We live on a beautiful coastal Maine island that is easily accessible by a handsome bridge...the view is breathtaking. We are just 10 minutes from all major shopping needs and schools, library, etc. yet our property is very private and pretty. We have a nice grassy area for games with a fire cirlce at the outer edges and lots of woods. There are trails next door for mountain biking and walking.
Personally, I'd love to have a couple of women here as I am unfairly outnumbered. We could accomodate one couple, individual, or parent and child inside and others who may have their own temporary housing options like yurt, bus, teepee, etc.
We look forward to sharing meals, child raising joys and challenges, bicycling the

Exciting opportunity for a healthy, energetic, co-operative, self-supporting, hard working organic gardener to take part in a new project with the potential for original creativity and long term influence.

Looking for someone who is ambitious about living off the land, organic gardening, vegetable production, processing and preserving, food preperation, cooking and raw food. Interest in some or all of woodland management, eco-building, self sufficiency, alternative and renewable energy, becoming involved and totally grounded, music, spirituality, life and learning would be beneficial!

Sierra Nevada, Granada, Andalusia, Spain

Exciting new project in stunning location bordering the Sierra Nevada National Park at an altitude of 4900ft (1500m) above sea level. We are restoring an ancient organic farm which has been deserted for more than 45 years.

The farm is not an established community but operates within a natural locally thriving community where it is still possible to live a simple life apart from the influence of mass-media, advertising and the constant demand of popular culture.

Ongoing long term projects include rebuilding infrastructure, re-establishing organic vegetable plots and gardens, woodland and soil management. We are maintaining and restoring the traditional stone cortijo (farmhouse). Loads of re-discovery. Every day brings new wonders from the bio-diversity of nature, the uncovering of past history and abundance. We are now starting to create facilities

Hi
Life wasn't meant to be so complicated. I'm a carpenter/boatbuilder,electrical/plumbing/mechanical/gardening skills. I'd like to find an established, self-sufficient community in a moderate climate. I've lived in Maine most my life, so something near the coast, or a lake would be nice, to get away from it all. A smaller setting with open-minded adults working as a whole, no bosses or dictators, (majority should rule). A mutual money making project for things we can't produce/need, and just enjoy a simple, hassle free, timeless life. Do as you want as long as no one is harmed in any way, kind of like the fabled island of atlantis, right down to running around bare assed and being polyamorous if that's what floats your boat! maintain/practice your own belief system, but don't preach, be a vegan, or eat meat/poultry if you want, or both if such a thing is possible. You know, live and let live. I wouldn't mind going back 200yrs in time, (if I could bring some chosen technology with me!). I'm hoping for a true communal setting, no renting this or leasing that from the "owner", therefore having to work for money elsewhere to pay for it, that seems to defeat the purpose. I'm 50, great sense of humor, clean, well-studied, done a lot of traveling, I have a decent vehicle, some hand/power tools, and a lot of experience. I'm strapped in Maine with very little work as yet, and not much cash, due to a minor illness. I'd welcome a donation to get me on the road...HELP!!

I am Vegan male (57) in good health, have had experience living on communes and in collective housing. My geographic preference is the country-side (not isolated from culture); specifically an organic farm with CSA, Farmers Market and Cottage industry. Vegetarian community is o'k.

I have been a core group member of; non-violent social activist collectives, a few communes, a community garden collective ( farmers market; education programs ), a vegan cafe, core member developing by-laws and community hand-book. Also, attended a non-profit law and organization educational program.

I have studied formal horticultural techniques; green house, experienced organic gardening; french intensive, permaculture, Fukuoka and John Tillman Lyle. Studied landscape design and Architectural design.
I enjoy planting, harvesting, cooking, meditation, yoga, Tai chi, hiking, swimming, laughter, play, arts, work groups (cottage industries).Intellectual expression and emotional awareness is important to me...and openness with others. I accept clothing optional situations; my spiritual bent is taoism/buddhism.

I prefer group consensus, land trust, non-profit, agrarian, non-violent based community. If your group is open to design-enhancing changes contributing to an efficient sustainability; feel free to contact me...where it does not snow and rain so much is preferred...

Would anyone be interested in forming a community in South Carolina? I live in the Upstate, but would be open to other South Carolina locations. I have been an organic gardener for many years and am interested in a community with organic gardens growing vegetables, herbs, fruit and ornamentals, with a possibility of market gardening, a CSA and maybe a coop. I would hope for a community that is open to eating organic, whole foods, to include some healthy, local animal products. I would also hope that the community would be open to people of varied spiritual persuasions. I am not interested in income sharing, but am interested in a community of mutual support. In November I’m going on a six month trek down, then up the West Coast. I’m an artist who has been able to live well for many years by being a caretaker of other people’s properties, and also have been artist-in-residence for parks, retreat and Buddhist centers. I’ve learned to live on very little money because I barter. I’ve traded my work and art for beautiful places to live (including utilities and sometimes meals), doctor and dental visits, air-line tickets, and overseas travel. I’ve just completed my first documentary and this winter I will be shooting my second documentary on bartering. I want to show people how it’s done and that there’s an alternative to the mindless rat/money race.

In 2007 I spent four months traveling around the Northwest (Oregon, Washington, and Canada) and had a great time, met lots of good people, and didn’t have to pay for a single night’s stay the entire time. I set up work exchanges before I left and ran into other opportunities along the way. I like working on construction and using power tools, and have done lots of taping and mudding of dry wall. I’ve worked professionally doing regular and faux painting. For parks I’ve carved large sculptures and could carve something for you and teach you how to carve. If you have something you’ve been wanting to put up on Youtube, I could create a video for you. I spent years working with computers, and am an experienced vegetarian cook. Do you have a large job that you’ve been putting off

Hi everybody,

We (my husband and I)have a small piece of forest land (6000m2) available on the Gabon's coastline that we would like to dedicate to an eco community. For now, the land is still virgin, with only trees and a river. It is part of an African village (Cap Esterias)of fishermen who already live mainly from the nature. The context is rainforest, African village and culture, traditional leadership, tribes, chamanism (especially Bwiti)and very little development in terms of roads and infrastructures. However, the land itself is not directly into the village, there is quite a walking distance which will ensure full autonomy. Any help, piece of advice, experience sharing is welcome. For now, it is still at a state of project.Everything is possible. It is Africa. Everything is conceivable in terms of temporary accomodation (for the time of building and setting up our community) in the main village. We are in a quite good position in this place in terms of alternatives and possibilities. All will depend on the like minded people we are able to attract to us.

Very small community in Snohomish, WA has a house for rent ($1,000 mo). There is also some opportunity for work. We have a lot of space for gardens and are currently in the process of adding edible plants, bushes, and trees in hopes of being self sustaining someday. Our property is located very close to shopping, bus, etc. (less than a mile), yet it feels like the country and has a beautiful view.
My vision is all about sustainability, healthy eating, growing lots of food, peaceful atmosphere and living in community. I would like to find other like minded people that would like to participate in our community.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by a life that has you on the run all of the time...searching for meaning and connection? We are experiencing that here on our 4 acres in MIdcoast Maine and are hoping to entice some like minded folks to come live on our property with us. We have three children who are 10, 15 and 18 and many outdoors oriented interests like bicycyling, kayaking, hiking and walking our dogs, skiing and gardening. The menfolk here (everyone but me and the two dogs) are very mechanical and musical. We love a good game of Scattergories or rummy and throw the baseball around every chance that we get (they love to laugh at how unpredictable mom's arm is at 45!) We love a good laugh, a drumming circle around the campfire and trying new foods esp using locally grown veggies and fruits. We have a room we could rent/trade and some outbuildings including a cabin that needs some work, a bus type camper and room for your temporary housing be it yurt, teepee, or portable cabin of sorts...bring it here and we can live a more intentional, connected life. We are just 6 miles from modern conveniences but have a very private setting close to water and trails. We are half an hour from both Augusta and Brunswick and an hour from Portland. Would love your input. Come visit....bring your open mind and curiosity..

Building a 21st Century Homestead:
Would you like to live in an urban region that still has a country feeling? How about re-skilling yourself to live off the land and in a sustainable holistic way? Do you care about community building, social issues and the environment?
I have some space in my home, there are rental units across the street and very close by in town. I am an entrepreneur and will share income with other kindred spirits and but I do not have money to pay you directly for your help building a homestead with me.

I'm willing to teach others, but people with skills and trades are most welcome too. I can not support you but will help you to support yourself. Together we can live off the land and within the greater community there is much opportunity to thrive and build a homestead and lifestyle in urban agriculture and sustainable local food delivery systems(growing local food).

let me know what you think

I am looking for advice on how to spend six months of free time in a spiritually profitable way.

During that time I need to move myself from California to the Northeast near the Montreal border as I await my Canadian residency.

I am slightly disabled but I am also educationally overqualified for most work that I have undertaken in the past.
And I have a very small stipend to take care of living expenses.

My ideal position would be as a teacher of natural science or art. In fact I was an art teacher for the public school system and a preschool teacher. And I could teach college students as well. I also can cook, sing, sew, and turn a small profit making and selling beaded hairpins.

I would be very grateful for any advice regarding a good place to either be an artist in residence, a temporary visitor, or a community helper/intern.

Many thanks,
Amy

Forming in Saskatchewan (province), Canada. (I'm somewhat open to joining in other locations, too.) I look for those w basic philosophy of self-development (improve yourself, not change others...). Mature, cooperative, fairly independent, have some money or can earn it (we have to buy land, etc), respect the environment and seek a more self-sufficient, off-grid, organic lifestyle in a natural setting. Jobs available in this area. (Remarkably, the economy is still strong here.) Or make money off the land - market garden, etc. If you have spiritual beliefs, good, as long as you are respectful of everyone else's. I'm learning meditation, maybe you are, too. (Fools argue spiritual things, wise people discuss...) I get along w positive people w humility, a sense of humour, practicality, vision, creativity and who aren't freeloaders or mere escapists, and who want to maintain/develop their mind, body and soul, and contribute to the world around them. Goal is also to create a haven from the global chaos which is shortly to come. Your current problems & obstacles are less important to me than your attitude, and age doesn't denote necessarily maturity, so all ages welcome, as are families. Separate dwellings. Purchased or self/cooperatively-built. I'm a builder, inventor and farmboy. Prefer site within 10 miles of a town and 60 of a city, in a quiet, beautiful place. This region has many pluses. We'll talk lots first. Questions?

Hello...

I am a Mother with the two youngest children living with me full time(1&3 years.) I am looking for a self contained style of community (individual dwellings.) Currently I am taking time to nourish/nurture my body because of some health imbalances so really am looking for a living space that is in harmony with nature that nourishes the very depths of my soul as well as my childrens well being. A place that is child friendly, multi cultural, art centered and a very positive conscious community. I will be honest, I am a Mother that is exhausted and am looking for a conscious village to raise these two beautiful souls. Normally, I am a hard working woman that has experience with homesteading, natural birth and all aspects of natural living. Right now it is pertinent that I find this healing place and will rejuvenate my body, mind and spirit to give back to the community. We are currently in Canada, but will consider different places, especially those with a moderate to warmer/tropical climate. I am interested in finding an IC that is made up of a "village" of individual homes and maybe a common building for shared meals, etc.
These things interest me: sustainable living, organic farming, not being dependent on utility companies, non-political, and being with like minded people who really don't want to be part of the outside world anymore then they have to be.
Faith based would be alright, but I'm not into the typical Bible thumping, men-rule-over-all kind of groups that have a lot of rules. I would prefer all faiths welcomed/respected, and one who tries to live greenly, recycles, reuses, etc. Not into a consumerist lifestyle.
I have experience living in the country, and hope to be able to garden, preserve food, raise chickens, and much willing to learn and help out on a variety of things concerning farm/community life.
I am a 52 yr old lady, and have a de-clawed/neutered cat that goes where I go. I've worked in electronics for 25 yrs, and hopefully there would be places to work outside of IC, and/or opportunities within.
Would prefer to stay around S Ohio, Kentucky, or Tenn, but am open to all.
I am looking forward to talking with other like-minded folks!

At this juncture (being 62, female), I'm aware of two priorities in my life (following family)-living in community and service work. This post is for exploration. In my life, I have taught elementary and college, been a therapist, bodyworker, hospice volunteer, and, for the past six years, office manager for a person well-known in the shamanic world, as well as having experience in community living.

I'm looking for financially affordable community (within a day's drive of central Indiana), as well as my next part-time work. Would like to begin a dialogue about possibilities, suggestions, inspirations.

I can be reached at vickiburns2002@yahoo.com. Thanks! vb

I explained to Bruce that T.S.V. has No Geographical Existence; there is No Legal Contract between Terra Santé Village and Bruce Scher: Landlord, Board Member, C.E.O. and Core Member; conflict of Interest.

When community seekers, wwoofers, Interns, work party participants and volunteers Arrive on the Property, they assume they are under the auspices of T.S.V.s’ By-Laws. What they are contributing to is the development of the Bruce’s Property.

Those who vote contrary of Bruce at meetings are subject to eviction due to the fact that they are technically guests or renters Without a Lease Agreement with Bruce or via the Protection of the Terra Santé Village Lease Agreement; neither of which exist. Therefore, all inhabitants on the property can be asked to leave at any time.

At the Present time he is Utilizing and Formula of 24 Hours per week as Work Exchange. I informed him that the Minimum wage rate in Arizona was applicable to that formula; turns out to be $696. Per month for Sub-Standard Illegal Housing (RH: Rural Homestead permits only one Resident) and Dumpster Diving for your Food. He is using the 120sqft non-permitted building structures as Housing or individuals have their own dwelling, tents or Vehicles.

If Bruce rents property without disclosure of All Code Violations to the Terra Santé Village members, they will incur liabilities and consequences; therefore jeopardizing the Legal remains of the Terra Santé Village Community.

Hi! We are a family of 4 with a baby on the way. We are looing for a farm community where we can raise our children, we want our children to be able to enjoy the greater things in life without all the urban drama that has made its way into our society. If we moved we would have to live on 1000 a month income until we are established. I am a certified horticulturist aide, I was raised on a farm in central WI and i also have about 10 years of home building experience that I could bring to the right place. We are looking to move soon because we all know winter creeps up fast and we also need to get our son situated with school. We would like a place were we can work mostly right with the community and use our income for any other necessities that we may need including. If anyone has any ideas or knows of some good places please email us at traveling2009@europe.com

Thank You,

Hi! I'm currently running a web services company (copy writing, editing, marketing, web development, project management) and miss being in community. I think it's time for a change. Any communities out there that might be able to make use of a computer geek? I'm also an avid chef and am interested in exploring value-added farm products (cheese, yogurt, jams, etc).

I'm looking for a community where members are able to work within the community (as opposed to off-site).

Non-religious or tolerant of all beliefs.

I'm a 26-year-old female, with no medical conditions. I don't smoke cigarettes, but don't care if others do. Social drinker.

Hope to hear from you :)

Our vision for Covenant Ekklesia is to reform our modern idea of community. We want to see God's people sharing His love in a very real way throughout the week - not just when we gather for Sunday morning worship.

We were created in God's image and God is 3-in-1; in constant communion with God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Likewise, we are to be in fellowship with our brethren. We believe this can be best accomplished through a return to the community church of Acts 2:44-47 -

"And all that believed were together, and had all things common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all [men], as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."

While we may not practice complete common ownership of goods, we envision a community settled on a common owned property, sharing in agricultural labors to support the community and living in simplicity that befits a traveler passing through a foreign country. One who does not intend to make the earth his home will not seek comfort in earthly treasures but rather will wish to "travel light" through this place and on to his home in Heaven unencumbered by the "conveniences" of the world.

We envision a community where families are strengthened by working together and worshipping

We're a family of 5 currently living in Midcoast Maine figuring if we can't convince our tribe to seek community somewhere else, we could bring it here. We have a 5 bedroom custom log home on 3 acres with 40 protected acres behind us and tidal river across the street. We are four fellas and a gal (ok, this is WAY unfair...I need some female energy sisters!!). We (THEY) like to build things and work on vehicles of all types...create some as well. Mom volunteers a good deal of her time doing fundraising for community causes and works in nursing with an alternative bent. We have two converted buses that could sleep a handful of people and are open to fixing up a rustic cabin on our land and bringing yurts or other temporary housing here. We have started some gardens here but need some creative energy to get it going (mom's too busy playing/coaching baseball and doing the boy thing and the guys aren't that interested......yet!) We have two out buildings with electricity that could be a studio for art/crafts. We'd love to have some chickens and goats, a cow...who knows. We love drumming circles, campfires and sweat lodges...board games, playing guitar, making jewelry and mosaics, exploring the island we live on and hiking hills nearby. Hope to have some closer connection with others who like these things, too. We are rural but not remote.....6 miles to groceries, hardware and mainstream entertainment sources and 25 min to a nice college town. We have kayaks we'd love to

June 12 to June 14: Consensus Facilitation with Laird Schaub
Good meeting facilitation can make the difference between pain and gain. In this two-day training we'll look at the basic qualities needed to become a full-service facilitator, the process agreements needed to spread your wings, and how to recognize those magic moments when passion can be harnessed to transform binding into bonding. The workshop is designed for people who want to learn to facilitate inclusive, up-tempo meetings. Day One will mostly be presentation of theory and materials, with plenty of time for questions. During Day Two participants will get to test drive the principles and techniques using role plays, followed by analysis. The course facilitator is Laird Schaub. Laird’s website is www.sandhillfarm.org/canbridge.html. While Laird's experience is mostly rooted in consensus, everything offered in this training can be applied with other decision-making processes. Tuition is $225.

Seeking Community Seekers Posted On 6/2/2009, Last Updated On 6/2/2009
We have been seeking community for a while now and have visited several but we are specific in what we want so here is what we are NOT looking for........

Religions, Communities that expect a buy in, People who us to pay for their Land, finally we are not going to live in a tent or your abandoned RV at the bottom of your field and cultivate your pot for you and field dress your "kill".

Not too much to ask, right?

Well, its not that easy, just look at some of the postings on here and see for yourself.
Many other cvommunities will not tell you what they are about until you get there, and then you are shocked as they do not follow what even their basic rules are.

We have some many skills to offer and all we ask in return is a nice place to live amongst like minded folk and we can help develop your community.
We can build, do electrical, plumbing, grow veggies, even gather nuts for the winter.

We are non-meat eaters so if we share a kitchen then that will not be a good fit.
We do not smoke or do drugs either.

We prefer to not be around livestock, even your pet cows.

Picky aren't we?

Yes, we are and we hope that you are too, so if we resonate then drop us a line.

I am forming a commune on a 6 acre property in Rural Okechobee, Fl. I am a 21 year old student, I am planning on growing a ton of organic fruits and vegtables, and also legal medicinal herbs. There is also a 30 foot deep pond to farm fish. There is a four bedroom 2 bath mobile home on the property.
I am looking for 4-5 roomates.
You must be a male(non-gay)(no hard drugs) between the ages of 18-30. You cannot be rascist, If you are apolitical and pacifist in nature it is a plus. One of the exciting things about this ranch is we will work on expanding our consiousness. (NOTE There is $150 a month fee to cover rent.) Also I like to drink occasionaly, if you are in recovery or you dont like parties we might not mix well. other than that you'll have a Kick ass and Rewarding Time at the Ranch.

I have experienced that the following message (website)is more than appropriate for the times we live in.

Taking responsibility first for your own life, then assisting others who are unable; not depending on passive gestures and governments to do for us what we must learn to do for ourselves. We are in a quantum, spiritual and societal shift...the perameters have changed but human beings refuse to adapt.

Question is, are any of us ready or willing to step up as individuals, communities and nations to make the changes we need NOW?

I'm in the Boston/Worcester/Providence area, and I'm interested in 'scattered-site' community--that is, in the idea of how people who don't actually live together can still do community. It could maybe also be called, 'local/regional lifestyle-cooperativism'...or something along such lines. Anybody know what I mean?

I'm committed to the formal Co-op Principles, including Open Membership, and Democratic Control, so the project would have to include respect for process, and commitment to growth, for my ideological needs to be satisfied.

Is this You? You value and respect the unchanging, creative, and supportive principles that have always governed the both the propagation of human life and the continued well being of all human beings. You’ve looked at several communities on the IC.org website, and maybe even corresponded with a few. But so far, all of the communities that you considered were either polarized in one direction or another (to varying degrees), or they address causes or projects that are too narrowly focused and therefore not addressing the 'big picture'. You are not convinced that any of those communities' activities (significant as they may be) are the be-all, end-all means to ameliorating any societal ills, nor are you convinced that those communities' causes and projects are the means to creating utopia. While you appreciate some of the values of the communities you looked at, you don’t totally agree with their beliefs or the way they operate, and so you can’t see yourself becoming one of their members. When it comes right down to it, you just plain don’t fit in any of the communities you've so far considered. Enter Spinnaker Eleos Community: * Moral and Ethical Beliefs and Practices * Non-Polarized by issue or religious belief * Egalitarian * Safe, Healthy, & Nurturing Social Environment * Respect for Individual Autonomy * Respect for Creativity * Nurturing & Supportive of Families & Individuals * Not Oppressive or Coercive * ***** Now seeking founding members *****

If you are interested in, resonate with this vision & my bio and have complimentary gifts, please contact me.

Here is my vision for a mature conscious community.

Though I am open to other geographic areas, I stumbled upon a possible location in CT. Every structure on the property, is potentially income producing.

At the present time there is a "renter" who provides income to cover the full mortgage.

There is a lovely building available for an Holistic Health Spa and Peace Center, a suitable building for Non-denominational Ashram/Healing Center, another spot for the Community Garden, A renovated Mammoth Barn for Horses and cars on the ground floor, (Paddock and corral on property) second floor for Spiritual Retreats, and third floor for sleeping quarters for retreaters. There is an exceptional swimming pool and lots of space for weekend fundraiser dances, events, and weekly Love-feasts.

58 year old, unmarried intellectual/spirit-seeking monk, with a Christian upbringing and Buddhist beliefs, seeks room/camping on vegetarian farm/commune. I used to work on horse farms and many truck garden farms, and I am a competent handyman/gardener/writer. I sat in front of a computer for the last 10 years, and currently have some stiff hips, but am rapidly recovering.
I have been taking care of my elderly mother for the last 10 years, but she is almost gone now, and I'm seeking the next step on my path thru this material world. I am currently giving away all my possesions, except for a backpack and bicycle..... it is sort of like the universe wants me to relinquish everything. A test perhaps?
Please email me and we can discuss more, if interested. If nothing else, I always have something interesting to talk about, and would provide good companionship to an older person/group. I prefer cool weather, so I'm looking to the Northern areas.

My husband and I are hoping to find an intentional community that would like to have a community school. Imagine having teachers from your own community that could teach your children in a way consistent with the community values. We could teach children fulltime or offer home school enrichment courses. We both have master’s degrees and have taught elementary, middle, and high school. Additionally, we know the logistics of starting a community school.

We would like to live and teach in a community that values religious freedom, liberal politics, healthy living, natural parenting, and self-sustainability. We have a four month old son and would like to live in a community with other families that include young children and babies so our child can grow up with others near his own age.

The three of us and our two amazing, well-behaved dogs are willing to relocate anywhere. The ideal situation would be for us to teach in exchange for housing and a small living stipend.

Community of spiritual beings with and without bodies

We would like to hear from anyone knowledgeable about the following:

What efforts have been made to extend the concept of community beyond the physical plane to include those in the spirit world? In other words, does there exist a community of spiritual beings, some of whom are in bodies and some who are not in bodies. We’re especially interested in communities that are committed to justice and fairness to all who their decisions would impact.

Thank you!

Polyamorous and poly-friendly IC group forming.

We seek to get onto land QUICKLY WITHOUT UNDUE HASTE. If you are more interested in discussing theory, other groups will serve your needs better (but questions welcome).

Polyamory is the practice of being open to more than one emotionally close relationship at a time (sex accepted as an optional expression of the caring feelings), openly and honestly. Learn more about polyamory at http://lovingmorenonprofit.org and http://polyamoryhandbook.com, numerous other sites.

A polyamorous group does not mean that everyone is sexual with everyone else (orientations permitting), just that the option is there. Nonpoly members welcome, if comfortable living in community with poly people.

We seek a rural area (but not remote wilderness) in the Pacific NW, ideally near Eugene, Oregon, but somewhere in OR or WA west of the Cascades. Seek to grow most of our own food, have own water supply, at least partially off-grid; probably have a few chickens, may have goats, sheep, llamas, etc. Not hermits; want to continue interactions with the larger community.

Function by cooperation, consensus, caring.

Seek people eager to be active--discussions via email at this formative stage; financial commitment to buy land etc.; then the physical and other work when on land.

Lurkers, control freaks and doormats, the socially challenged, and those allergic to responsibility need not apply.

Hey all,
I am located in Southern Ontario and am interested in starting an intentional community. I would like to get a good sized group together and purchase land communally somewhere within 3-4 hours of Toronto. Members would have their own plots of land to use however they like, and some land would be shared. My goal is to invest in long-term, low-maintenance food crops such as fruit and nut trees. Members would likely work and live elsewhere initially, until residences were built and they worked out a reliable source of on-farm income. Livestock would also be a possibility once enough members started living on the property permanently. The idea is that members have some freedom to try out their own stuff...but also get the advantage of a supportive community. Expensive things like cars, road maintenance, well-digging and such can be split up among members. This is just a rough idea of how things could unfold...everyone would obviously have a say in how we did things! This is a long term project...I expect to actually purchase the land in 1 or 2 years time once I have enough money saved. Anyone interested should contact me...and start saving!

If there's someone in particular you wish to try to contact, let us know. Be glad to aid. (Of course, this is something we do free and happy). ..Write us thru y.groups.

An older friend who lives at Friends House - a Quaker retirement community in Santa Rosa, CA - would like to know if anyone (or any group) in the intentional communities 'movement' has explored maintaining contact - a sense of community - with those who have left their bodies. His view is that a community is (ideally) a community of spiritual entities and so shouldn't be limited to just those who are in physical bodies. Has anything been written on this subject? Or anything attempted in terms of such a inter-plane connection?

My primary interests lie in reading & discussion, mechanical, natural and social systems, building & land use, permiculture & silviculture. I am particularly interested is goat and rabbit husbandry, water utilization, renewable energy/power. My life experiences and education may also be of value to less experienced members of your community. I very much like to work with younger people and witness the enthusiasm that is generated as they learn new things. I am looking for an intentional community to become involved in. Living in a multi-generational community with other like-minded, or at least diversely-minded, objective and compassionate people involved with community, nature, gardening, animal husbandry and other projects that work toward a more sustainable lifestyle greatly interests me.

Alabama Intentional Community Forming

If you are near, in, or might have a serious consideration in moving to Alabama to become part of a [forming] intentional community, and becoming self sustaining, be surrounded by "like minded" friends becoming family. Work both on and/or off the community, sharing resources, rewards, and projects together. Pay "much less" than what you may now pay monthly for housing, meals/food, utilities, etc... and too many more things than what can be mentioned here, drop by http://groups.yahoo.com/group/theedenproject

Only those with a real desire to join in this discussion need drop in as it is for the purpose of creating what we purpose, and as soon as possible. Members At Large [members interested but may not want to or need to live there yet, or might be a part-time resident], and Full Members, or in this case, Founding Members...are our focus. Local get togethers will be planned for cook-outs/camp-outs as we get there.

If interested in all things Sustainable Living, I.C.'s, Alternative Energy & Ideas just see us at http://essenceofeden.ning.com and learn & share.

Greetings!

I am a student with Prescott College in AZ, and I am taking a course on intentional communities. (The school program is self-directed and the courses are developed with and guided by a mentor.)

I have developed a survey (for academic purposes and personal interest only) specifically for people who are living in, have lived in, or are currently forming an IC. It is fairly short, composed of questions about practical structures of community, your feelings about living in community and what aspects of IC's are important to our culture. See the website at the bottom of this post to go right to the survey. It will be open for responses until late March.

I will be thoroughly giddy with appreciation for any participation I get! Feel free to tell your friends, family, and fellow communitarians as well.

If you have any questions about the survey or my school program, or you would like to dialogue a bit more in depth about your community experience, feel free to email me directly.

Thanks thanks thanks!!

Let me tell you a little about our community. we live on a 1 acre privacy fenced lot in a small town setting. we currently have 3 core members who are as different as night and day and mid-day. collectively though, we have the same ideas about the economy and forced consumerism ect. if you are like us and believe it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, are tired of the rat race, daily grind, daycare, working to pay for stuff that just didnt make you as happy as you thought it would and Love God and Country, we might be what your looking for. age ranges from 23-42 for our current members. you dont need any money, skills or physical things to come and join our group. we are all learning together. we plan on locating and purchasing 50-100 acres later down the road once we get our core member base. for now, we have plenty of space here to get started. our garden for the coming planting season is 150'x100'. we are creating the chicken run this weekend. we are starting with 25 chicks. within a week or two there will be goats for milk and cheese. we have a building in the back that is going to be made into a greenhouse. solar powered cabins will be built as needed. if this sounds like something you may be interested in, please send an email.

stop struggling day after day. end the cycle of not enough money but too much month. life is too short to live the way we are living in this world right now. come back to the values and way of life that has worked very well for thousands of years. does it seem to anyone that the last 100 years has brought on a lot of significant changes to the way we live. where in the history of your family did the art of canning food stop being passed on? or being taught to sew or mend clothing? how about quilting? im 40 years old and was never taught any of this. but i know my mom was. and her mom and her mom and her mom ect. what is the significance of the knowledge of basic survival being lost in just the last few generations? what would any of us do if suddenly there was no food on the grocery store isle? if you have ever lived through a major hurricane,(we did) then you know what im talking about. if its a big one, you could go a few weeks without food in stores, clean water from city water systems, electricity out ect. i hope we dont have to live through life that way, but what if? if you have been unsatisfied with your life to this point, give a community living setting a try. what do you really have to lose?

We are looking to LIVE. My daugter (5) and I (27)are searching for the right child friendly community.
We are free spirits and prefer the company of other free spirited people. I am a hard worker and I wish for my daughter to learn and work alongside me. I have strong interest in herbs, holistic health, gardening. There is so much I want to learn!
I have experience working on a theraputic horse farm.
We are looking for a community that is self or close to self sustainable.
All you need is Love. Income sharing in the sense that we don't want to be asked for money, we bring no debt with us and aren't looking for an income, just work in exchange for learning and acceptance. Right now we live in the city with my husband(whom we love dearly)that provides us with everything we could ever want. But we've come to a point where all we want is the simple things in life, like fresh food, grass, trees, fresh air, nature, LIFE and LIVING. While my husband isn't ready to give up everything, he is open minded and fully supports my decision. Right now he wants to continue teaching but will join us some day.
We like the idea of being off grid, but isn't neccessary. No practiced religion. Lots of trees. NON-violence. People that want to tread lightly on the earth and really know how to live and enjoy life.
We want to learn to live with the earth not against it.
We have a good sense of humor, and we strive to love everyone and everything.

Nyland is a cohousing community made up of 42 privately-owned homes in
a rural setting outside Boulder, Colorado with an expansive view of
the Rocky Mountains. Our community consists of approximately 135
residents with varied backgrounds, careers, ages and views. Yet, we
all share the same desire to live near neighbors we know in a small
neighborhood. We offer each other support and friendship, while
respecting each other's needs for privacy. Our common vision is a
physically and emotionally safe community where children play on the
pedways, neighbors lend each other a hand, and nature coexists
peacefully in our open spaces.

Available April 1st, the whole bottom level of a three story house
will be available. That includes one bedroom, a full bath and a larger
living room/den/office/????. There are windows and window wells in
each room, the south facing one is pretty large. The whole downstairs
is currently being remodeled and all the carpets in the house are
being replaced. The main level of the house is all hardwood floors,
has a big walk-thru kitchen, open dinning room/living room and a half
bath. Out back there is a fenced, south facing yard. The upstairs,
where my daughter and I will reside, has a bedroom, full bath and
extra room.

Rent is going to be about $600 plus a portion of the utilities.

52-Acre Community Seeking Connections with Similarly-Thinking People.

We are interested in expanding our community. We envision 10 households. Small, eco-friendly homes. Peace, quiet, multi-generational, interesting discussions, fresh ideas, acts of kindness. A huge organic garden (or a working organic farm) that would feed the community and others. Eventually off grid.

Who we are: Two friends. Writers, artists, carpenters, technical writers, organic gardeners. We are quiet, considerate, tolerant, liberal, progressive. We love nature, reading, animals, art, honesty, humor. We love our cats.

About the land: Partly mature forest, partly rolling pasture. Creek and swimming hole that have never run dry. We have built a small cabin and are converting an old barn into an art studio. Hiring a contractor to build a cabin or cottage is surprisingly inexpensive here in Alabama due to very low labor costs. We’ve put in organic gardens and enjoy a year-round growing season. We are planting trees.

There is a small town with grocery, etc. three miles away and a university town approx. 15 miles away. For those who must work off the land, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery are an hour or so away. Tuscaloosa is also a university town.

One thing for sure that we have experienced with "IC's" are the restrictions. A few are reasonable, practical; the rest are controlling, elitest and even curious.

Yes, yes, I recognize that each one has a right to determine who becomes a member and who does not but it begs the question of whether or not those very same communities are cutting off their head to spite their body.

Most of the restrictions rule out anyone who smokes or drinks a beer in the privacy of their own space. Obviously said restrictions ASSUMES said people are not worthy of a community. Never mind they have provable skills and excellent work ethic.

It's a disturbing trend that tell us most will not survive when things get hinky.

I'd like to dialog with those interested in forming a community in Saskatchewan, Canada, probably located 1-2 hours north of Saskatoon. Contact me if you are interested in 1) self-development through spiritual, wholistic and common-sense practices, through educating oneself, and through clear and compassionate thinking 2) independent, yet inter-dependent, harmonious living, near those of similar mind 3) a quiet, rural, ecologically-improved lifestyle 4) a fairly high degree of community self-reliance through such things as growing our own food and off-grid power 5) both a retreat from the current state of the world and a bastion against the greater, traumatic changes which are undoubtedly coming to society and the Earth, yet near enough to towns and cities with services 6) all-round positive, respectful living 7) intelligence, humour, practicality, etc. I'm an inventor, a builder, a gardener and a farmboy who likes music, writing, nature and meditation, to name a few things. This is a beautiful, spacious part of the world. In summer the days are 18+ hours long, and staying here for the long winter can be optional. Canada has much to offer in terms of being a fairly peaceful, tolerant, stable society, and in terms of natural environment. Part of the idea is to locate near our vast and wonderful region of lakes and forests.

i'm emailing a few people, mostly comparing notes about our hopes and dreams and i continue to look for people who will eventually want to come here to settle in "little white pines".

i'm still working on the one bedroom apartment downstairs. hoping to find a tenant so i can start paying back on my home equity loan. after i get the floor finished, i'm thinking i might move down there with my 3 cats. i don't really need a 3 bedrooms for myself. i'm hoping i will find someone to rent at first, that will lead to the beginning of a community.

i am always looking for new ideas for finding core members, potential members to "little White Pines". i'm lookihg for communities in my area, n.w. indiana who might be interested in planning together some kind of local workshops or gatherings to attract people to the intentional community movement.

I am currently seeking full time employment as a dishwasher, and as a responsible and courteous part of Dining Services associated with a progressive higher education institution. My first choice would be an educational institution in a medium size town which is rated high for walkability—and which is already aware of the need to provide pathways and safety instruction to encourage bicycle use.

I have taken into account the nature of the work I am doing [building The Interfaith Peacebuilding and Community Revitalization (IPCR) Initiative, see www.ipcri.net], the nature of the challenges associated with this work, the uncertainty in many fields of employment, and what I have found works well for both employers and myself. When I am working on long and difficult pieces of writing (I am working on a writing project now which may take a year to complete), and especially with the challenges in my particular field of activity, I find that I prefer earning a living by way of manual labor in relatively stable and responsible work environments….

There is a longer version of this post, located at the website of Aid Workers Network, posted on February 15, 2009 (see http://www.aidworkers.net/?q=node/2023 )

With that post, I have included two files: one with a draft resume and one with a draft cover letter.

I was wondering if there is anyone who has any helpful comments or recommendations for me.

Community Forming Gaia Grove Eco-Community Florida Posted On 2/15/2009, Last Updated On 2/15/2009
Hi, We are a group of community pioneers and friends located in Lacrosse, FL outside Gainesville. We've been forming an IC here since 2003. We're enthusiastic about establishing community here and are needing more solid people to become the core members. We have a very solid foundation including 91 serene gorgeous acres that are paid for. We're looking for emotionally mature, intelligent, cooperative, community and permaculture-minded people to join us and dedicate to this effort.
Our evolving vision is to create a functional, healthy, vibrant example of permaculture community in Florida. To us this means basing intentional community on egalitarian values, healthy living, sustainable technology, and right livelihood, including cottage industry and possibly income-sharing. We wish to be very involved with the wonderful local community by holding permaculture classes and other culture-enhancing ways. We are striving to be sustainable through growing food, buying locally, limiting consumerism, developing cottage industries, raising hens for eggs, using composting toilets, investing in alternative energy and rain catchment, using well water, and outreaching to the greater community in meaningful ways. We are inspired and visionary and need more healthy, like-minded people! Please check out our other ic.org listing and website.
We hope to hear from you soon!

Seeking partners in developing a diverse, highly integrated, mini-farmstead in/near the mtns. of western NC, USA.

Applying principles and inspiration from permaculture, forest gardening, and biointensive gardening practices and philosophies. Would like to include small animals such as chickens and goats, possibly beekeeping as well.

I’m envisioning a small group of people, each investing several thousand $ into a cooperative business venture (market farm/research farm) in the near term, perhaps later transitioning to community land trust, educational center, etc. in the future.

What are your ideas?
Let’s talk, let's do this!

Dear Friend,

I’m writing today to ask you to be a part of something important. To be a part of changing the structure of how we own homes and care for the land in our communities. To not just imagine a more equitable future, but take a positive step in creating that future today.

“Land belongs to a large family of man, some of whom are dead, many of whom are living and most of whom are yet unborn.” – Nigerian Chief

The Valley Community Land Trust has taken on the task of stewarding parcels of land in Franklin County Massachusetts so that the community – past, present and future – can have a say in what is done with the land. Is it a good place for housing? Farming? Ecological preservation? How will our actions today impact the land and its ecology? What is a reasonable price for access to land? These questions can be asked and considered when land is owned by the land trust.

You can help by:
* Giving a monetary donation
* Contacting us about a land donation
* Becoming an active member
* Applying to live on VCLT land

Since 1977, when VCLT was incorporated, we have acquired through donations and purchase, over 200 acres of land in Franklin County, MA. This land has provided homes for more than 50 people and provided a base for agriculture, forestry and various cottage industries.

We hope that the next 30 years will find us touching the lives of even more people, protecting more land, and helping to care for the land in Franklin County for another generation.

Hi everybody,
I'm an Italian man, 45 y o looking for a community of smart and free people. I used to be media designer for entertainment. In this last part of my life I took a graduation in fisiotherapy for children, to use it for humanitarian work. Lately I took permaculture courses in Brazil and Argentina, one of which with David Holmgren. I've spent last year getting to know different biomas. I'm an art oriented person yet very practical. My knowledge is extremely flexible and can contribute in different fields. I'm agnostic and compassionate. I love beauty and humility.. I would like to join a project of sustainability. I'm actually in Argentina, but open to move.

happy groundhogs day! don't know if a shadow was seen and never can remember what it means anyway!

i look fowards to spring with hopes that my forming community, LITTLE WHITE PINES, will get a start by finding at least one person to help me with the beginning of a core group. it's hard finding the right people, but not an impossible thing...it takes time, like with any important relationship. we start out as strangers.

we should take time to know the people with whom we want to start a community. i have found, to my surprise, that it is possible to get to know people through emailing and group discussions. but one should be careful and not jump into something that is bound for disaster.

my stumbling block so far is finding a core group and would like to hear what others have done to find the right people.

i'd like to hear from people who have similar goals and problems. i'd rather not hear from anyone who thinks they have all the answers, are hung up on some "cause", or who are angry at the world in general.

does anyone belong to an active meaningful internet discussion group about intentional community? i have a group on CARE2 called COMMUNITIES IRL, but would be interested in joining other groups for discussion, not just promoting my community or my group and would not appreciate someone coming to my group for that purpose.

thank you for listening to me babble on. i wish the best to all of you, myself included, in finding community! i'll be back in 2 weeks!

Intern at Pendle Hill Quaker Community outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Pendle Hill's Young Adult Leadership Development program takes place for seven week from mid-June through the beginning of August, and is designed for 18-24 year olds serious about serving as leaders in their communities, developing the tools for social transformation, and living a life grounded in God's Spirit. The YALD program consists of three major parts: community-based service, both inside and outside Pendle Hill; spiritual formation and religious education; and diverse community living experience practicing sustainable living.

Pendle Hill, founded in 1930, sits on 23 acres in a suburb of Philadelphia. We are a functioning arboretum, with a community garden, art studio, library, and worship space. We eat communally, and enjoy organic, homemade food. We offer classes and activities that enrich spiritual transformation and social activism.

YALD participants will be a part of the residential community of Pendle Hill for seven weeks, a community dedicated to serving, learning, and growing. The program focuses on identifying and exploring what it means to be a leader, what it means to serve in a spiritual context, and what it means to live sustainably. Ultimately, the program considers the query, what does it mean to live a radical life? We ask participants to explore core issues of faith, theology, ideology, and purpose – inviting all to consider how they are called to serve in the world.

Dear people,

I am 62 year old male, looking for a place to live in California.
My interests are ecological and social sustainability, designing the future--
ModelEarth.Org .

I have a BA in Anthropology (May 2002, U of Hawai'i at Hilo).

I like gardening, growing food for myself, would like to keep bees,
grow bamboo (non-invasive kind!) to build houses with, to eat, etc.

I have an independent income.

So much said--what I am looking for is somewhere to settle down; I
wonder--would it be possible to get a piece of land to grow enough
food for myself, either with you, or would you know of somewhere in
your vicinity where I could get a piece of land on rent/lease to own?

I would like to be independent (I need to have a dugout of my own), on
the other hand I am quite gregarious and do miss the company of
congenial friends to mingle with on occasions.

I smoke and drink.

I do not have a car (by choice), but I do move about on bicycle, when it's really necessary.

Thank you, sincerely - Mr. Jan Hearthstone.

I'm working on incrementally creating a new reality - a modernized IC that captures the spirit of creativity, honest work, good energy, human connectness and a meaningful existence.

It's not a daydream. I've picked up an idyllic plot of land - rolling hills, river, trees, pasture and productive land in western Saskatchewan (Canada). I've started to work on buildings and site development. For now, it serves well as a recreational getaway.

I'm a mid-40's professional guy, an optimist at heart, but I'm quite aware that there needs to be fundamental shifts in our relationship with the earth and with each other. I believe that influences such as peak oil, excessive consumption, self-centredness and a sustained economic downturn will all combine to fundamentally alter the way we live in the very near future. I'd rather consciously create my own future than let future events soley dictate my circumstance.

I'm not quite ready yet to walk away from my suburbia life but I'm exploring how to transition from today to the ultimate tomorrow. I'm looking for adventurous, responsible, fun, self-aware people who have similar thoughts and are interested in creating a new reality. Initially, it would not be a full time IC - I envision a small group of people that get together for a weekend, week or few weeks at a time during the summer and then seeing where that goes. With the right people and the right energy, the rest will fall into place.

Interested? Then, drop me an e-mail.

Got the Zoning or Building Code Blues?

Although I have yet to actually join with others in an ecovillage project, I'm a serious advocate for ecovillages and have had opportunity over the years to learn of two of the many serious challenges or obstacles faced by prospective ecovillagers: land use ('zoning') regulations and building codes.

Zoning codes, which are handled by municipal and county governements in the USA, generally obstruct the creation of high population (or building) densities and mixed land uses, e.g., agricultural and residential and commercial. "Ecovillage zoning" was invented to eliminate this obstacle, but most of the relevant governing bodies haven't even heard of these! 'Variances' are sometimes possible, but persuading the governing bodies to allow for these can be costly in time, money, and patience.

And then there are building codes! Often the most green designs, systems and practices are not up to building code snuff.

Should each group and individual have to face these challenges alone? My answer is No! So I'm researching toward a "handbook" to be used by prospective
ecovillagers and by municipal and county governments (North American).

If you can -- and would like to -- assist with this project or related organizing, please contact me!

Re Jim and Cindy's posts, I will be taking my Mom to her church to do charity quilting later today. I live in Canada and it's 30 below at the moment, so we appreciate the value of a quilted blanket! I know how to make them, too. I've made a point of learning some of these skills. It helps growing up on a farm, but anyone can learn anything. I think "old-timey" skills will indeed be very important from here on. They always have been, but now even more so. I don't see the economy improving much for a decade or several. I actually see a lot strife and difficulties, as greater climate changes and earth changes and other factors come to bear. So, yes, take some time to learn to grow some vegetables, glean some food from the wilds, fix a shoe and so on. I am putting in a woodstove, too, since I no longer trust the reliabilty of any ultilities. So, the reasons for greater self-reliance are not only ecological, but just plain logical and practical in terms of the direction the economy and things are heading. But, I think I am largely preaching to the converted here....

Echowood Farm, a rural community located in Central Texas (an hour from Austin) is looking for adult (18 and over) prospective members who are interested in helping to create a community made up of individuals with diverse backgrounds. The community was established April 2007.

While we welcome both visitors and people interested in living here, at this time we are especially seeking people who are dedicated to living a communal lifestyle in a rural setting. We're currently working to develop a solid core of people who want to work with us over the long term to build a community based on friendship, environmental responsibility, and a rewarding life outside of the consumerist mainstream. We are currently growing but are still welcoming visitors.

Echowood is located in a pastoral setting of oaks and fields.

You don't have to have any specific skills to visit or join. You also do not have to have a particular religion. We invite anyone who is genuinely interested in working with others and living in community and working with us to come and try Echowood out! For more information check out our website at echowood.org, and our ic.org listing.

stop struggling day after day. end the cycle of not enough money but too much month. life is too short to live the way we are living in this world right now. come back to the values and way of life that has worked very well for thousands of years. does it seem to anyone that the last 100 years has brought on a lot of significant changes to the way we live. where in the history of your family did the art of canning food stop being passed on? or being taught to sew or mend clothing? how about quilting? im 40 years old and was never taught any of this. but i know my mom was. and her mom and her mom and her mom ect. what is the significance of the knowledge of basic survival being lost in just the last few generations? what would any of us do if suddenly there was no food on the grocery store isle? if you have ever lived through a major hurricane,(we did) then you know what im talking about. if its a big one, you could go a few weeks without food in stores, clean water from city water systems, electricity out ect. i hope we dont have to live through life that way, but what if? if you have been unsatisfied with your life to this point, give a community living setting a try. what do you really have to lose?

We are looking for people who are willing and able to relocate with the idea of developing an extended non-Amish community in close association with the Amish. There are over 1000 open-hearted Amish in our area, with farms, a general store, harness shops, bakeries, wood shops, buggy shop, metal shops, and schools. People who are actively making life decisions with peak oil, peak everything, economic depression, climate change, and potential societal collapse in mind, have much to offer to these good neighbors, and much to learn from them. If you are interested, we would like to talk by email over winter, and then possibly plan a meet up for spring. We are about an hour north of Madison, Wisconsin. We are focused on a solid sustainable homestead/community based on hard work, honesty, stewardship, local food and craft production, and respect between people, creatures, and the planet. Further information is in the directory. Survival is not enough, we intend to thrive. If you think we may have mutual interests and complimentary needs, please respond to this.

My situation is, many aspects of IC appeal.. and some aspects don't appeal to me at all, so ultimately I haven't dived in fully. I think I might like the IDEA of "intentional community" more than I'd like the reality. -UNLESS- It were an intentional community of people who don't *like* lots of "socializing" just for its own sake and in fact find being around most people tiring. This describes me. It amazes me to see how many people post saying they're creative types yet seeking a lifestyle that by definition keeps them in the midst of people almost constantly.... this seems incongruent, as I and most other creative or "thinker" types only rarely crave socialization; we love and require large amounts of solitude, sometimes to the point of seeming from the outside to be anti-social. I'd be interested in an IC that acts as a support system if and when needed but otherwise is more or less "hands off" -- where no weirdness ensues if one is not sufficiently radical about environmental issues, doesn't eat the "right" things, or has no interest in esoteric mumbojumbo... send any thoughts to phroogal at gmail.com
Comments northstarvision Posted On 1/22/2009, Last Updated On 1/22/2009
I have been reading the ic reach page for over 12 years and we have been listed as a forming community for even longer. Someone on the reach page mentioned many communities were not very organized, too much time discussing or figuring out who was to do the dishes etc.
After visiting communities and one of us living in an ic for awhile, we have concluded that most ic's that are struggling do not have an effective internal structure which governs their philosophy and daily life. There should not be discussion about who does what, it should all be organized beforehand and during the meetings, which do not happen in alot of the smaller communities.
Another poster asked, "How long does it take to form a communiy?"
We still are 2 individuals, it has taken over 20 years, we do not have land yet, but, our stucture of how we intend on living is organized and our intent is as strong as it was 20 years ago. It takes as long as it takes to gather the right people and the right time to evolve. I am not sure I was even ready before now, so people evolve too, just don't let go of the dream. Intent is everything.
I also have a question for the readers of this post...Are there other AIM(EMC2) participants out there who are wanting to form community? Or if you are an AIM(EMC2) participant and would like to write to other participants interested in community please write.

Does anyone know of a contemplative community, established or forming? My idea is a small group of friends living rurally or semi-rurally in individual houses/cabins, who meet several times a day for silent meditation.
I'm a Buddhist practitioner, but have lived in in such a ecumenical community composed of Buddhist, Catholic, Jewish, etc. meditators, so am open to all those or more -- as long as there are no predominant rituals or religions taking over the show, and silent meditation practice by mature practitioners is the focus and focalizer.
This community is probably leaderless/teacherless, but maybe not (depends of course on who's assuming the mantle of leadership!)Please contact me if you are aware of such a community, or are interested in forming one.

I search for wisdom, experience, and learning. I am a young woman who is impassioned about developing community, sustainability, ecological awareness, and localized economic self-sufficiency = being human TOGETHER.

I find learning from experience and example is effective for me, while making connections between communities I bond with. I feel that this is a mutual gift to share and grow from, SO...I humbly ask to learn from your community as I travel the West Coast this spring.

I will begin in my community in Bellingham and Tacoma in February, and head south. I will spend as much time learning as needed until April, when growing season begs my return. Thank you very much and may you live in love and light.

Blueberry is an urban collective house within an organic cohousing community in Portland, Oregon. Four sets of friends bought houses on the same block, three in a row and one across the street. Each house has a one-fifth acre lot for a total of about three quarters of an acre, allowing extensive gardens. We love the unintentional community of our neighborhood, friendly, diverse and mostly low-income with small houses on large lots and a "country" feel.

An urban life allows us to be less car-dependent.
We share passion for our land, our neighborhood, social justice and sustainability. All of us grow enough vegetables to eat well and still give some away. At Blueberry we heat with wood, generate almost no trash or recycling, eat primarily local, organic whole foods, and commute by bicycle. All of us have jobs and lives "off the farm" - we are musicians, teachers, bike mechanics, etc. A few of us embrace spirit and ritual, others choose not to.

Blueberry is seeking an adult, couple, or family for an indoor bedroom. Rent is $450 for 1 person. Work trade (construction or repairs to the house) can reduce rent by up to 50%. Our bills are very low because of gardens, bulk purchases, and conservation measures.

We need time to get to know you, so unless we have some prior connection, it is best if you A. live in or near Portland and B. do not urgently need housing. Our ability to house visitors is limited.

Please tell us about yourself.

hey everyone,
so…I've been wandering the infinite online universe for what seems an eternity and as of yet have not found the place I've been searching for. so I will cast this message in a bottle to the endless digital sea and wait and pray that I am not alone. I seek a hunter gatherer society that also farms and forages, somewhat separated, but buy choice, not by fear, an open arm tribe that always has room for one more. as for me…well I am a self-employed construction slave, of 15 years, that is neither a stranger to nor afraid of hard work, though I do fear this notion of working hard to dig a hole that year after year is looking more like a grave than a life.
if you understand call me, we should talk.

Another reason you may not be getting responses to communities forming posts--I have never heard of a community that was formed by people who never knew each other before. Perhaps they exist, but every community I've ever heard from was formed by people who already had a bond. With all the hard work and potential for conflict, I just can't imagine forming a community with people I'd only met recently, regardless of how much we had in common.

Does anyone know if that community is still in existence? Their only listed contact info was a mailing address: I sent an interest letter with a SASE on Oct. 1st but got no response.

I would appreciate any information you might have, like how I might get in touch with their point of contact. Or what happened if they are no longer a community. Thanks for the help.

I think one of the reasons people may not respond to communities that are forming is that usually the posts have some grand vision of community but don't mention any practical ways of achieving their goals. I lived in a 25 person coop in Wisconsin and am currently at an 80 person community in NYC, and let me tell you, living in community takes a lot of work. Trust me, you'll spend as much if not more time figuring out who's going to do the dishes and clean the bathroom than you'll spend discussing your grand dreams to transform the world. If you really want to form a community, and I think it's great if you do, I really recommend visiting existing coops or communities that have been around for awhile. Visit Twin Oaks, EastWind or Ganas. If you're more interested in smaller communities, there are plenty of those around as well. Get an idea of what is involved on a day to day basis so you know what you're getting into. If you have an understanding of all that's involved, particularly the small stuff, I think you'll have a much better chance of attracting people to help you create your vision. Or you might just find that the community that you want already exists somewhere. Good luck.

I just saw two posts from people forming communities and having difficulty finding people. We can do much better by working together.

There are people out there who have land and are trying to form a community but not getting the people.

I know some groups without land in Europe and USA, who want to form communities.

I want to form a cluster of very small communities on one piece of land.

It is very difficult to get people to agree to one thing or another, so to please as many as possible, we simply form multiple communities, each slightly different.

In short the advantages are: Attract people easier; If the community you live in fails, you can join another without leaving your home; More collaboration; More socialization; Learn what works and what doesn't from others.

I am looking for transgender individuals who are interested in forming an intentional community specifically for those who are transgendered. Among other ideas, I'm considering the formation of a community based on the okiyas of Japan. If you are interested or just curious, please drop me an email.

Looking to collaborate with a creative non-fiction writer

I am looking for one very creative non-fiction writer to co-own, co-author and collaborate on a work-in-progress project which I’m calling the NewTownVision. I’ve been doing internet research and writing about this idea since 2004. I have a lot of strands that need to be pulled together. I can’t pull these various strands together by myself. My theme is the creation of a town with full amenities anchored by a holistic hospital. Sound interesting?!. I am willing to join a similar project that has already been started or start from scratch. I see the possibility of a book project as a marketing tool for the development of the physical project. YOU could get to be one of the decision makers on this project.

we are a small group of under 10 at this time looking to form a eco-comunity of 12 steppers and that are open to the 12 traditions for our guidance. we are looking to secure land in canada. we are also very open to earthships and would like build a community of them. marginal agriculture land, as close to $1000 per acre would be stellar we are interested in up to 500 acres, and we would section them off to no smaller than 4 acres parcels.

rosemary, i understand your frustration. i also have decided to open my home and form a community but havnt gotten any responses yet. i finally decided that if i really really want to be in a community, i am the one who will have to find one to go to. i decided to sell my home and everything else i have and move to an existing community. there are very few people out there willing to do that. thats probably why we arnt getting any bites. but im not waiting for anyone else anymore. im just going for it. i'll let you know how it goes..lol. you can email me at the_mystic_oak@yahoo.com

why is it so hard to start a community?

i listed a forming community, LITTLE WHITE PINES about a year ago and have had very little response. the group i formed on care2, COMMUNITY IRL is not very active. some of the members, like myself, have land but no people...no core group. it's hard not to get discouraged and i wonder if not enough people know or understand about the intentional community movement. i wonder what other forming communities are doing to attract people. diane leafe christian said that only about 10 percent of forming communities will be successful!

Exploring Possibilities in the Lake George, NY area.

I've no experience with IC, but am interested in connecting with folks who are reading the same writing on the wall as I am. Looks to me like small communities may be the social organization standard of the mid-twenty first century.
Sittin' on 135 ac. three miles from pavement and power poles, mostly wooded and rough, but with aprox. 2 ac in various forms of cultivation, some requiring serious manpower to rejuvenate. Stream & pond that has supported a captive trout population in the recent past. Off grid, solar powered house. Community scale biodiesel from WVO operation. Barn/workshop/studio. Short growing season and long winters.
I'm 51 w/a 9 yr old son, interested in a sustainable lifestyle and independence from the insanity that seems to be the norm these days. I eat pretty much whatever is in front of me. Love my guitar and my books.
Anybody want to brainstorm?

Hey folks.... happy new year to you all!

Myself and a few fun loving nice communitarians are living out at our land right outside of Gainesville, FL.

We're looking for folks that play well with others and that would like to help cocreate something really special. We're on 90+ acres of land bordering a tranquil river.

I'm personally into music, music and more music with a dash of infinite love.
But honestly projects ranging from sustainable farming, permaculture, eco friendly housing as well as learning to let go of all the junk we learned in highschool are all available and happening to one degree or the other.

well please give us a call and lottsa love to you all!

52-Acre Community Seeking Input and Connections with Similarly-Thinking People.

We are two mature friends interested in expanding our community of like-minded individuals and families.

(No kids.)

Seeking Retired City Planner, Retired Architect or Retired Hospital Planner/Developer

I have done extensive research and have the beginnings of a proposal to create a new town, sometimes called an ecovillage. My desire is to create this village as being both environmentally sensitive and very affordable to working-class people. In order to take this idea to the next stage of development, I need two partners to flesh out the ideas as well as create deliverables and time-lines.

The NewTown Vision:

I will consider the NewTown vision to have made a real start when there is an infrastructure of two buildings: a hospital, and a halfway house/clubhouse. Ideally these are located in a highly urbanized area such as Staten Island, NY

20 medical professionals from a wide variety of disciplines and healing traditions, who live in the five NYC boroughs work in the hospital. Customers come from all over the country for total care, both mental and physical. Payment is sliding-scale, so the hospital is probably largely funded by already-established nonprofit foundations who support the vision. Some customers may need to live in the hospital permanently. There is a mix of inpatients and outpatients. The hospital and clubhouse are sustainable buildings with a home-like atmosphere.

My husband and I formed an intentional community in Slaton, Texas. This Christian based community focuses on learning to be sustainable and eventually off the grid. We are looking for like minded individuals who believe that this way of living going on today has broken down the fabric of our morals, faith and family. we believe that times are going to get a lot tougher and that life may get to a point where survival will depend on preperation and knowledge of sustainability. we have one community house on 1/2 acre for meals bathrooms/showers and fellowshipping. each family or individual will have their own cabin for personal space and sleeping. the cabins will be built as new members join. one goal is to live as cheaply as possible so we can eventually move away from outside employment. every aspect of daily life will be shared. we will live as simple as possible. as one big family. we will help each other and contribute as much as we can to the community. the goal is to become completely self sufficiant and learn to live in the world but not have to depend on the world to live. we will eventually grow a surplus of food that we will sell or trade for supplies that we cannot grow or make ourselves. we believe in defending our comminity but not into radical gun and ammunition hording. if there is anyone else out there that believes like we believe and wants to make this community a reality, please contact me. the $1500.00 join fee can be taken in trade through labor or goods

Seeking same-minded, serious Christians that would generally maintain some of the sound beliefs commonly held by historical Anabaptists. The Anabaptist name itself is derogatory and we only accept it to distinguish us from the Romanists and the reforming Romanists (Protestants).

Check the link and review what is there to determine if you are like-minded.

I would like to introduce myself. I am a 55 year old man. well that is my chronological age my real age is around 35 according to the markers and data as our real age goes. My background in studies and skills deal with the healing arts being a massage therapist, voice dialogue, Reiki master etc.

I have also been a successful business owner of a company I founded which created a all natural and organic progesterone cream for women. Speaking of business some of my skills have been in the area of coaching people and organization in creating and successful marketing of which for lack of a better term New Age thought. I do well in co-teaching people to reach their goals and to access their own creative energy. I value honesty and personal intergity above all the virtues.

I am seeking a community where my life experience will not only fit in well but have a synergistic effect for all. I am currently in South America finishing up on some projects and plan to be back in the US in a couple of months. I have lived in a community lifestyle before and I do best in the type of community where personal freedom balances well with personal inergity, honesty and of course love.

So please if your a heart conscious community that believes in living a natural, open life and could use and wish to live with a person like me and see a place for me in your community please do write me and tell me about your community.
Thanks for reading and blessings to you all..

Cause when you KNOW LEDGE you begin to go backwards to new OLD WAYS....you know kinda like where we will ALL BE very soon. You SEE...we dedided here at FARE SHARE FARM we WILL DO
the RESPONSE ABLE thing and BE honorable here on the farm....because what DO YOU now KNOW with KNOWLEDGE comes the ABILITY to RESPOND to any given situation at any given time. And guess what? ....that makes us KNOW LEDGE ABLE.

Blessings and Love, Truth and Joy be with you ....but thats another language barrier....yeah that's right the TRUTH really does set you free. and really it's all really LOVE...tough love at that. Here on the farm we call it TRUTH LOVE. and guess what we smile and laugh a lot. and yeagh we WIll BE dancing FREELY when you KNOW the falling off point happens. And what Do you KNOW?....the farmers WILL RECIEVE ...more later....
